briefly gorgeous

Presented by Norte Maar at CounterPointe10
March 24-26, 2023, at The Mark O’Donnell Theater in Brooklyn, NY

CounterPointe is an annual dance festival, produced by Norte Maar, that pairs women visual artists with women choreographers (specifically working with the pointe shoe) and gives them the space and freedom to collaborate on something—anything. This year, serendipitously, I believe, I was paired with Etty Yaniv, a brilliant (and strange, and beautiful) Israeli visual artist who, like me, left a country and another life behind to live and create here, in this one. In creating this work/story/world together, we talked a lot about transience—about shedding, rebuilding, remembering, letting fade; about accepting change, and even embracing loss—but that wholehearted embrace of it, of impermanence, which migration (or death, or really the end of anything) seems to necessitate.

In this conversation published on Art Spiel, Etty and I discuss our collaboration, talking phone calls, books, cardboard boxes, Chopin, transience, dreams, and magic—inevitably talking and writing back and forth in much the same happily fluid and rambling way we spent our brief(ly gorgeous) two-month collaboration.
